Hey there!
Have you ever wondered what makes readers not just visit but stick around on a blog? The secret sauce to creating a loyal readership is having a sticky blog. It’s about building a connection that’s strong enough to bring readers back time and again, making your blog a go-to spot for valuable, relatable content.
In fact, every time I create a podcast, blog post, or video, my goal is to make a lasting connection. I want my readers to feel like they know me, like we’re old friends chatting over coffee about the things we both care about. If you love videos, I’m sharing my thoughts here on my YouTube channel, too.
A sticky blog does more than share information; it builds trust. When your audience feels seen, understood, and supported, they’re naturally drawn to what you have to offer. Here’s what I’ve learned along the way, starting with my very first podcast back in 2005 and continuing through my homeschool blog in 2012. So, let’s dive into how you can create a sticky blog that grows and connects with your audience.
1. Start by Talking to the Right People
The first step to creating a sticky blog is knowing exactly who you’re talking to. Think of your ideal reader and imagine sitting across from them. Who are they? What challenges do they face? What keeps them up at night? For me, I often think of the women in my audience who are juggling a lot—parenting, working, or building their own business. These are people looking for a connection, some inspiration, and actionable advice.
A sticky blog thrives when it’s centered around a clear niche and targeted toward an audience who genuinely needs and appreciates what you bring to the table.
(Get clear on who your audience is before you dive into blogging, and stay focused on this target audience while building out your content. This foundation will make your blog feel like home to the right readers!)
2. Keep the Content Flowing: Fresh and Frequent!
Once you’ve nailed down your audience, it’s time to keep them engaged by delivering fresh content regularly. If you’re serious about building a sticky blog, you have to love what you’re writing about. Whether it’s weekly or even daily at first, staying consistent helps your blog feel like an active place where readers can rely on fresh insights.
Here’s a quick-start content plan for keeping that sticky blog thriving:
- Map Out Your Goals: Where do you want your blog to be in a year, six months, or three months? Write it all down in a dedicated notebook or planner.
- Create a Weekly Posting Schedule: Posting on the same day each week can build anticipation with your readers.
- Stay Inspired: Don’t just create for the sake of it; share what genuinely excites and moves you. Readers can sense authenticity, and that’s a big part of making your blog sticky.

Now, let’s talk about what really makes a blog sticky: content that resonates so deeply it brings people back for more. I call this “sticky content.” Think of it as the heart and soul of your blog, content that grabs your readers and makes them say, “Wow, I need to hear more from this person.”
Here are a few ways to create that kind of content:
- Podcasting and Vlogging: Back in 2005, I started podcasting to encourage women in their faith. It was a way to connect more personally, especially before social media was huge. My voice became a “sticky” connection with my listeners. Suddenly, I wasn’t just some faceless person online—I was real, with a voice and a story. Vlogging can work similarly, giving your readers a chance to see the person behind the words. Here’s more info on how I started a podcast.
- Share Stories: Don’t shy away from sharing bits of your personal journey. People connect with stories, especially ones that reflect shared experiences. A sticky blog is often built on relatable, human moments.
- Help Your Readers Take Action: Give readers actionable advice they can implement right away. This helps them see immediate value in what you offer, and they’ll keep coming back for more.
4. Link It All Up with Internal and External Links
One of the best ways to make your blog sticky is by using internal links strategically. When you connect your blog posts to each other, you’re inviting readers to stick around longer. Have you ever noticed that once you start reading one post, you end up clicking to another, and then another? That’s the magic of internal linking! Here’s an example of my internal linking in this blog post: check out my post to find out how to create content for your audience so that you can continue to make your blog a sticky one! (See how I linked the phrase “create content for your audience”? It’s truly that simple).
Here’s a tip: Keep a running list of your blog topics so you can easily reference them in new posts. The more connections you create between posts, the longer readers will stay—and the stickier your blog will become!
5. Add a Strong Call to Action to Every Sticky Blog Post
No sticky blog post is complete without a clear Call to Action (CTA). Think about what you want readers to do after they finish reading. Here are a few options:
- Invite Them to Subscribe: Encourage readers to sign up for your newsletter so they never miss a post.
- Suggest a Freebie Download: Create a guide, checklist, or planner that they can grab by signing up.
- Direct Them to Another Blog Post: Link them to another relevant article that deepens their understanding or expands on what they just read.
Always ask yourself, “What’s the next step for my reader?” A sticky blog guides readers toward the actions that will build their loyalty. If you’ve noticed, I try implementing this step on most of my blogs. Sometimes my CTA is at the beginning or middle of the post rather than the end, but I like to have something there to give more value.
Building a Sticky Blog as an Introvert
Here’s a little secret: I’m actually an ambivert with a tendency toward introversion. Showing up online consistently hasn’t always felt natural. But over time, I realized that connecting with my audience is so worth it, even if it takes a bit of extra energy. If you’re an introvert, you might feel the same way, but here’s what I can tell you: creating a sticky blog is less about being an extrovert and more about being real. When you’re genuinely passionate, people can sense it.
