Hello there! I’m Demetria, and today, I’m taking you through my entrepreneurial journey—two decades filled with challenges, successes, and lessons learned. My story highlights how staying consistent, not perfect, has been the key to building a sustainable and fulfilling career as a digital marketer and content creator.
A Humble Start
In 2002, I was a brand-new mom with a tiny infant and a desire to create something meaningful. The idea of returning to work just six weeks postpartum didn’t sit well with me. I knew there had to be another way—a path that allowed me to stay with my baby while building a future for my family. That’s when I decided to take a leap into entrepreneurship.
I started with a soaps and body butters business, creating handmade products from my dining room table. My husband, a web designer, helped me set up my first website, marking my first foray into e-commerce. While the business itself didn’t last long, it sparked my love for web design and ignited my entrepreneurial spirit.
Diving into Digital Products
After my initial venture, I shifted focus to creating digital products. My first video course taught skills and inspired others to pursue their own passions. In 2004, I began designing websites for small businesses, leveraging my growing expertise in web design. As my skills expanded, so did my confidence, paving the way for new opportunities.
Around the same time, I launched an online community for women of faith. This platform served as a space for sharing articles, prayers, and uplifting content—laying the foundation for a future of creating meaningful and impactful work.
Podcasting: A New Frontier
By 2005, I discovered podcasting—a game-changer in content creation. Back then, podcasting was still in its infancy, and creating one required navigating technical hurdles. Despite the challenges, I launched Christian Ladies Talk Radio, my first podcast. Soon, it evolved into a full-fledged show with an RSS feed submitted to iTunes.
This experience inspired me to teach others how to start their own podcasts. I developed the Internet Radio Podcast Boot Camp, hosting teleseminars (early versions of webinars) to share my knowledge. These early ventures laid the groundwork for a thriving career in digital media and education.
Balancing Business and Family
In 2008, my entrepreneurial journey intersected with a new chapter in my life: homeschooling. As a homeschooling mom, I created content tailored to the unique needs of families like mine. My blog and podcast for homeschoolers gained traction, becoming valuable resources for a growing community.
In 2012, my family relocated from the Deep South to the West Coast. This transition was both exciting and challenging, requiring adaptability and resilience. Despite the upheaval, I remained committed to my business, continuing to create content that resonated with my audience.
The Power of Consistency
Over the years, one lesson has stood out above all others: consistency is key. But let me clarify—consistency doesn’t mean perfection. There were times when life got busy, and I couldn’t stick to a rigid schedule. What mattered was showing up over the long term, even if it meant taking small steps forward.
Consistency has allowed me to build trust with my audience, refine my skills, and stay relevant in a constantly evolving digital landscape. Whether launching new projects, recording podcasts, or writing blog posts, staying the course has been the foundation of my success.
Navigating Change and Growth
The digital world has transformed dramatically since I began. From dial-up internet and basic HTML websites to today’s advanced platforms, I’ve had to stay adaptable. Embracing change has been essential, whether learning about SEO, social media marketing, or video content creation.
Through it all, my mission has remained the same: to create meaningful content that helps and inspires others. From coaching aspiring podcasters to designing websites and sharing insights on entrepreneurship, my goal is to empower others to pursue their passions.
Lessons Learned
- Start Small, Dream Big: My first business may have been modest, but it paved the way for everything that followed. Starting small gives you the freedom to learn and grow without overwhelming pressure.
- Learn as You Go: I didn’t know everything about web design, podcasting, or digital marketing when I started. But a willingness to learn made all the difference.
- Consistency Over Perfection: Showing up consistently, even imperfectly, builds trust and momentum over time.
- Embrace Change: The digital landscape is always evolving. Staying adaptable and open to new opportunities is crucial for long-term success.
- Build Community: Creating a sense of connection with your audience can amplify your impact and provide a support network for your journey.
Looking Back and Moving Forward
Reflecting on my 20-year journey, I’m filled with gratitude for the experiences that have shaped me. From launching over 50 domain names (yes, I’ve tried a lot of ideas!) to building successful brands and learning from failures, each step has been a valuable lesson.
Today, I continue to create content, coach entrepreneurs, and explore new opportunities in the digital space. My passion for entrepreneurship and content creation has only grown stronger. Looking ahead, I’m excited to keep evolving, learning, and inspiring others.
Final Thoughts
If you’re just starting your entrepreneurial journey or looking for inspiration to keep going, remember this: your path doesn’t have to be perfect. What matters is staying true to your passion and showing up consistently. The rewards of creativity, resilience, and community are worth the effort.
So here’s to dreaming big, starting small, and embracing the journey. Thank you for joining me in reflecting on these past 20 years. I can’t wait to see what’s next for all of us in the ever-changing world of entrepreneurship.
